Experience village life in forests of Goa’s often forgotten interior within the Bhagvan Mahaveer wildlife sanctuary at the foothills of the western Ghats visit a local market, a cashew nut factory, and an isolated basket weavers hamlet, and bathe our elephant, saraswathy, in the clear stream waters. Dress in traditional attire, visit an ancient Hindu temple and have afternoon tea in the near by village before enjoying an evening dink of Goa's famous cashew Feni and lively local campfire entertainment. For the naturalists of the group an early start for a nature walk before a chance of an elephant ride & a swim in the refreshingly cool Dudhsagar waterfalls. Return to the coast after stopping en-route for a lunch of traditional dishes at the spice plantation.

 

The tour begins with a morning pickup from the hotel to begin the drive inland towards the eastern border of Goa. Stop for a while in a temple town of Ponda with time to visit the local market and buy bananas or vegetables to feed our elephant.

 

Make a short stop at a cashew nut factory to buy some freshly roasted nuts and where a guided tour will show you the amount of work that goes into producing one of Goa s main crops.

 

Continue on to a remote basket weaver’s hamlet to see this traditional craft at work, as it has been for generations, before arriving at backwoods camp for a lunch of a traditional,

Local dishes cooked and served in clay pots.

 

After lunch head down to the near by streams for the chance to give our elephant a scrub and cool off with a swim in the crystal clear waters.

 

Get dressed in traditional attire of sari for ladies, dhoti & kurta for men… and ladies, have you your hands painted with henna ……

 

…..before and afternoon walk takes you through the near by village, to meet the local children, & enjoy an evening of “chai” and "onion bhajis" cooked over fire wood in a traditional mud-built village home.


As dusk falls, a walk to a forest clearing takes you to one of India’s national monuments- the lord Mahadeva temple dedicated to lord Shiva, dating back to between the 11th & 13th centuries.

 

Back at backwoods camp, enjoy dinner and a taste of locally distilled cashew Feni. Followed by a camp fire with lively local entertainment & Konkani songs.

 

Your accommodation for the night is in cozy tents or cottages, each with attached bathroom, electric light & fan & surrounded by the tranquil forest of the Baghwan Mahaveer wild life sanctuary and the foot hills of the Western Ghats.

 

Wake up early morning to the sound of bird song & monkeys chasing through the trees for early morning tea & coffee. A short nature walk will introduce some of the regions flora and fauna, before time for an elephant ride.

 

After a short ride in four wheels drives arrive at the pool of Dudhsagar waterfalls for a refreshing swim in the cool, clear waters with Bonnet Macaques for company.

 

Stop for lunch at a spice plantation, where a guided tour of the property gives you an insight into the spices that made your meal so tasty?

 

Return to your hotel early evening with some unique memories of a wonderful experience in a region of Goa so different from the coastal belt.
